Elisa Monte Dance Company debuts three new works while celebrating 33rd season

Elisa Monte Dance Company will celebrate its 33rd season with three world premieres starting May 15th at Alvin Ailey Citigroup Theater. The season is a testimony to the company's interest in breaking new ground and sharing the gift of dance with as broad an audience as possible.

Last week, Monte and company pushed the curtain aside by having an open rehearsal for three days at City College's Aaron Davis Hall. This examiner saw the new works as well-rounded works in progress. The choreographers- Founder Elisa Monte, Associate Artistic Director Tiffany Rea-Fisher, and principal dancer Joe Celej, created pieces which reflect the progressive nature of the company as an evolution in movement.

Ms. Monte said the open rehearsals were enjoyable because of the use of the stage. "It's so nice to rehearse on a stage...There's that distance to really see it take shape. In my studio it can be so close."

Celej's work, Their Roots Rest in Infinity, features a trio of males whose acrobatic energy required no music at certain points. The rhythm was still present without sound. Rea-Fisher's piece, Persona Umbra (Shadow Person), is a duet with women. It's a very athletic piece with the music being aggressive industrial sounds varying from machinery to little drumbeats. Lonely Planet, the work created by Monte, features eight dancers fluidly moving through the space, then a spiritual eruption occurs, and they gradually pull in to become their own rotating world.

The Company will be part of the CUNY Dance Initiative in the Fall, and the opportunity to have a mini-residency this month to practice for the season opener served as an indication of a solid addition coming to the university's art program.
