We had stopped for lunch in Los Banos, CA, on the Eaglerider media tour I was invited to last year and it had been raining. I had on my rain suit. As I got off the bike I noticed black stuff on the pipes, and then I saw that the leg of my rainsuit was a little melted.
Better the rainsuit than my leg, of course. Well here's some news. A company called Industrial Nanotech, Inc. has today announced a new product that they say can put an end to burns from touching hot motorcycle exhaust pipes. The product, Nansulate® Cool Ride, is a clear liquid that you paint on the surface you wish to render less scorching hot and that's exactly what it does. For additional heat reduction, apply more coats.
Going with a variety of tag lines such as "Burn rubber not your body" and "Put the frost on your exhaust," Industrial Nanotech's promotion of the product pitches the idea of protecting your loved ones in bullet points such as these:
- The majority (70%) of exhaust burn victims are on average younger than 25.
- Burns from motorized vehicles are two times higher for children than for adults.
- Most (52%) of burns occur in late spring/early summer during peak riding seasons.
- Just as many passengers are burned as riders.
- The majority (69%) of passenger burns are female.
- Many burns happen while motorized vehicle is not in motion.
- Mostly burns affect the hands or the right leg below the knee.
- Most burns are at least 2nd degree.
- Some burns are 3rd degree and require surgery.
- Some of these burns will require plastic surgery.
- Severe burns scar and will never fully disappear.
- Burns often cause infections which can require hospitalization.
- It can take several weeks to months for a severe burn to heal.
- Severe burns will on average cost 3.5 hospital visits.
Who among us has no experience at all of touching hot pipes? I haven't had an opportunity to try this stuff out but if it works as they say it does, and it doesn't have any unexpected negative results, I'm betting they're going to sell a lot of it.
