A horrible tragedy has occured in Connecticut, and the liberal-progressives are following their usual tactic of not letting any crisis go to waste.
However, the worst mass murders in America have been committed with gasoline or explosives, not guns. Gasoline is very inexpensive; you can buy 5 gallons and kill an entire school, and you don't even have to be 18 years old. Yet progressives would deny the Founders' intent and our God-given liberty, by denying good citizens the right to posess the minumum firearm that would be needed to resist government tyranny; the high-capacity semi-antomatic rifle.
This is the essence of our liberty: People are not free when the government disarms them, and the government, by denying citizens the right to own these semi-automatic shoulder arms, is actually denying people their citizenship. As a point of fact, we actually should be permitted to own fully automatic military-style shoulder arms under the Second Amendment, as the citizens of Switzerland are. Restricting citizens generally to only semi-automatic firearms is a major concession to the progressive mind set of "the government knows best".
Here are three instructive quotes from Aristotle:
"When the citizens at large administer the state for the common interest, the government is called by the generic name — a constitution . . . in a constitutional government the fighting-men have the supreme power, and those who possess arms are the citizens"
"Since it is an impossible thing that those who are able to use or to resist force should be willing to remain always in subjection . . . those who carry arms can always determine the fate of the constitution"
"As of oligarchy so of tyranny . . . Both mistrust the people, and therefore deprive them of their arms"
What happened at the Connecticut Elementary school is a terrible tragedy, but I really wish the progressives, who believe in all things government, would stop trying to use emotion to destroy liberty as a result of their lack of understanding of it.
Instead, we should be looking to more realistic solutions for such incidents, such as the elimination of "gun free" zones, where nearly all of these massacres occur, and going back to due-process long term confinement for the severley mentally ill (they were all released into the streets by the Courts years ago- see the radio interview at this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=lZwIBpdRwow).
