Eli Roth’s “Clown”

Eli Roth is a “love’m or hate’m” kind of filmmaker.  His brutality is matched by few in the industry and his fan base is huge among modern horror filmmakers.  From “Cabin Fever” and “Hostel” to “Inglorious Basterds” we all have at least one Roth film in our collection.

This new Roth footage is definitely something to get excited about, while I first began to recall some Goosebumps lore, I quickly realized that this is still the same old blood spurting Eli Roth that we all know and love; and not cheap quick money film.

The story behind “Clown,” from what I tell, is based on a father who wants to make sure that his son has a happy birthday.  In doing so, the father gets a clown for the party, which of course goes wrong when the clown cancels the day of the party.  In desperation the father takes matters into his own hands and begins riffling through the attic in search of some way to pass himself off as a clown.  The party goes off without a hitch and his son is thrilled, but after the party Roth kicks it in, and the makeup won’t come off.  As hard as he can scrub the makeup just won’t come off, and the clown wig seems to have fused to his head, as much as he cuts the rainbow curls, it just grows right back.  And it wouldn’t be an Eli Roth film if the clown guise didn’t turn that father into a hideous evil creature.

My DVD recommendation for today is “Clownhouse “(1989).  Just before Halloween, three young brothers alone in a big house are menaced by three escaped mental patients who have murdered some traveling circus clowns and taken their identities.  Enjoy.
