'Elevate' your golf game at Wintergreen Resort

Looking to get away this summer or fall and actually enjoy a round of golf?

Maybe you need to fine tune your game.

I have just the place for you.

It's a place where there are two great courses, an academy that can put your game through its paces, and more than capable instructors that will give you one-on-one instruction that you can use immediately.

I'm talking about Wintergreen Resort in Roseland, Virginia. Located about an hour outside of the campus of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Wintergreen is a four season resort (not a Four Seasons property) that caters to families that like to be active.

It also is kind of an under-the-radar golfer's paradise.

"We get about 45,000 rounds of play each year, combined, on the two courses," offers up head golf professional, Philip Licata.

That looks like a good number for these courses as both Devil's Knob (located at an elevation of almost 4,000 feet) and Stoney Creek Golf Club were in perfect shape, on my July.

To say I enjoyed Devil's Knob Golf Course is an understatement.

This mountain top gem may play less than 7,000 yards, but don't let that put you at ease. The course is tight, bunkers are placed right where you don't want them and there's a lot of slope and elevation changes to deal with- on the fairways, in the rough and on the greens.

It was also 58 degrees and warmed into the 60s during a July morning. The cool and crisp air was a nice welcome coming from hot and sticky, Atlanta.

Devil's Knob is a course you won't soon forget.

Stoney Creek, a Rees Jones design, is located "down the mountain" as the locals say. Here you get 27 holes of golf with mountains in the background. The natural landscape comes into play as do streams and wetlands.

Stoney Creek offers a nice change from what one will experience at Devil's Knob.

Devil's Knob is for members, member's guests and guests staying at Wintergreen. Stoney Creek is open to the public.

If you are struggling with your game, you might want to check out the Wintergreen Golf Academy where Licata or one of his associates can take your through a one, two or three day academy program. There are also junior academy programs where video and the latest technology are utilized to the fullest.

Wintergreen Resort is located on Wintergreen Dr. in Roseland, VA. Basically it's located on top of, and at the base of Wintergreen Mountain. Resort activities include skiing (winter), golf, tennis, tubing down the side of a mountain, archery and a fun park. Visitors can rent condos, houses and other properties for their stay.
