According to the official website of “Elementary” the synopsis is right here - “It is a modern-day drama about a crime-solving duo that cracks the NYPD's most impossible cases. Following his fall from grace in London and a stint in rehab, eccentric Sherlock (Holmes) escapes to Manhattan where his wealthy father forces him to live with his worst nightmare - a sober companion, Dr. (Joan) Watson.”
The episode “Solve For X” opens with a mugging of a businessman in the streets by a black male who takes his wallet. He beats the businessman & runs into an alley behind several houses. He hears gunshots as someone comes out a back door & sees him. That someone guns down the mugger.
Sherlock comes to the crime scene to find a math tutor shot dead & lying on his living room floor. Sherlock discovers that the tutor had written on his walls with a special pen that is only exposed by a reflective light bulb. All over those walls are math 'equations' which might be connected to why the tutor was murdered.
The chemistry between Sherlock & Watson is exciting to watch & at times comedic when Sherlock reveals his peculiar techniques in solving crimes. One of his math friend's takes a look at the 'equations.' Felix who was killed supposedly worked on a complex math problem & if solved it could be worth $1 million dollars. Another man who collaborated with Felix has now become the next person to be murdered.
Meanwhile, Watson visits the grave of the man who was under her care when she was a doctor. She made a medical mistake causing his premature death. His wife later sued Watson in court for damages. His son Joey is now asking Watson for a $5,000 loan to help him open his new bar. She feels guilty & wants to help him. Sherlock is suspicious about it all when Watson asks for a money advance.
As the investigation goes deeper, the 'equation' turns out to be worth more than $1 million when solved. If so, then anyone can use the 'equation' that a computer cannot read to break into any internet online program. Many companies believe that 'equation' is worth more than $30 million.
Sherlock gives Watson more than $22,000 to help Joey. Why? Felix knew a woman named Tania who becomes a suspect, but she said her ex boyfriend is framing her for that 'equation.' She also has an air tight alibi on the night of the murder of Felix. Can Sherlock & Watson solve this crime filled with complex numbers?
