Elegant Eating from Downton Abbey: Chambord Shrimp

Large luscious fresh shrimp. A subtle and elegant touch of spice. The slight sweetness and scent of raspberries. This is how the aristocrats liked to dine. Whether it be an elegant dinner party for special guests, a wonderful spring garden party or a mid-day High Tea, the food of the Edwardian era which was served at the abbey's was nothing short of wondrous.

Whether it be during the Edwardian era or today, Chambord Shrimp is a wonderful elegant fare. It is very simple to prepare but be warned, Chambord is not a cheap liqueur. What is Chambord? It is a French raspberry liqueur which comes is a very artsy bottle and will run you about $20.00. Is it worth it? Very much so!

Ingredients needed to make Chambord Shrimp (serves 4 as an appetizer):

  • 1 pound shrimp, peeled
  • 3 Tbs. oil
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 4 green onions, minced
  • 1 tsp. powdered ginger
  • 1/4 cup Chambord


  1. Dredge (coat) the shrimp in the flour.
  2. In a large saute pan, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the dredged shrimp and cook 7 minutes.
  3. Add the green onions and ginger and cook 2 minutes.
  4. Add the Chambord and swirl the pan around to blend it. Let it cook a few minutes to create a glaze over the shrimp.
  5. Remove to a serving plate and enjoy!
