E-cigarettes: Healthy tool or gateway device?
This was the title for a segment on CNN on Friday, September 13, 2013. There is no question that electronic cigarettes, which are commonly called e-sigs, are unhealthy and that nicotine is highly addicting. The segment was written by Jen Christensen, CNN. On NPR on Thursday, September 12, 2013 a research scientist from Duke University stated that the dangers of e-cigarettes were not yet known. This is an outright lie, and there is no doubt that the following statements are true.
- Electronic cigarettes provide a direct path for nicotine to the lungs and then to the brain.
- Nicotine is addicting and is directly linked to heart disease, constriction of blood vessels, and toxic effects on the liver, lungs and kidneys.
- The propellant used in e-cigarettes is propylene glycol, which is listed as a hazardous chemical when inhaled and requires a Material Safety Data Sheet be posted in manufacturing plants were it is used.
- E-cigarettes are not being controlled by the FDA despite the known dangers of nicotine, and the added dangers of addiction to nicotine by adolescents and young adults.
According to a new study by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), a total of 1.78 million children admitted smoking e-cigarettes, with 160,000 of them doing so while never having tried ordinary cigarettes. E-cigarettes are a $1.7 billion industry. This is another attempt by the tobacco industry to addict a new generation of smokers. The number of young people using e-cigarettes doubled from 2011 to 2012. The CDC report is found at http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm6235a6.htm.
Propylene glycol is used as a food additive, and according to the FDA it is harmless. Huntsman International is a supplier of propylene glycol. It provides the following information in their Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).
“PROPYLENE GLYCOL – USP
FOR EXCIPIENT USE ONLY.
ASPIRATION HAZARD IF SWALLOWED - CAN ENTER LUNGS AND CAUSE DAMAGE.
THIS PRODUCT IS NOT TO BE USED TO PRODUCE FOGS OR MISTS IN
THEATRICAL, MUSICAL, OR OTHER ENTERTAINMENT PERFORMANCES.”
Best Life is the name of a company promoting the benefits of e-cigs. They are located in Toledo, OH. These are some of the claims made in marketing the Best Life e-cigs. They are similar to the lies told by the tobacco companies that once used medical doctors in their advertising. “Enjoy everything you love about smoking without the bad”
We cannot afford to allow another generation to become addicted to nicotine. The health costs of nicotine addiction are immense, and they will grow. The e-cigs are targeted towards young smokers using images of smiling participants, ocean scenes and the usual proven advertising approaches to entice purchase.
The electronic cigarette industry is employing “scientists” from various universities to state that e-cigs are much safer than traditional cigarettes. A 22 caliber pistol is less dangerous than a .357 magnum, but both can kill you. This is an issue that you should discuss with anyone considering smoking electronic cigarettes. They will become addicted to nicotine and suffer the economic and health consequences.
