Elections 2010: The open California 19th district

A flooded race for the 19th Congressional District could have far reaching implications for not only Fresno County, but the Central Valley, the State of California, and the Nation. On December 29th, 2009, Congressman George Radanovich (R-Mariposa) released a statement saying he will not seek re-election in 2010, thereby making the district open in the mid-terms. Although Radanovich will finish his term, the wide open field will allow a fresh voice to be heard, and provide a very competitive race in a Republican District.

Challengers for the 19th District are Les Marsden (D), Dr. Loraine Goodwin (D), Jim Patterson (R), former Rep. Richard W. Pombo (R), and state Sen. Jeff Denham (R). According to the L.A. Times , former California Secretary of State Bill Jones is also considering entering the race.

The Center for Responsible Politics reports a fund-raising advantadge to the Democratic candidates, and a slight advantadge of Les Marsden over Dr. Goodwin.
