Elections 101: Altadena Town Council application deadline May 10 at 5 p.m.

The Altadena Town Council is urging residents who are interested in running for a seat in their census tract to pick up the application packet and take it to the Altadena Community Center no later than 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 10, 2011.

Packets can be downloaded and printed from Google Docs, or they can be picked up at the Community Center, 730 E. Altadena Dr.  The hours for the Community Center are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The packet includes an application, candidate information, 2011 election rules, a map of the census tracts, ethical standards and Town Council bylaws.

The election will be held on June 11.  A pre-vote for those unable to vote on Saturday will be held on June 7.

Readers who are not familiar with the Altadena Town council can find out more about it at “Elections 101: Altadena election tutorial” in this column.

The Town Council is an advisory board that keeps County Supervisor Mike Antonovich in touch with issues and interests in unincorporated Altadena.  Council members are elected by census tract; each of the eight tracts has two representatives who serve two-year terms and are elected in alternate years.

A candidates' forum is scheduled for May 17 during the regular Town Council meeting.  Polling places will be announced at this meeting as well.  The Council regularly meets the third Tuesday of each month.
