Elderly Sarasota man wrestles gun from suspect in home invasion

SARASOTA, Fla. (Dec. 24, 2013) — An elderly man wrestled with one suspect for control of a handgun during a home invasion Tuesday.

According to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office:

A man wearing a dark masks over their heads broke into a home on the 4700 block of Stone Ridge Trail at about 6:30 a.m., entering through a sliding glass door. It was unknown if the door was locked.

The suspect removed a flat screen TV and other items from the house. The victim, a 65-year-old man, was inside the house at the time and tried to flee, but one of suspects forced him back into the house. The suspect then forced the victim into his bedroom closet and blocked him in.

The suspect went to the victim’s bedroom and removed a handgun from a gun case. A struggle ensued for control of the gun, and ending up with the suspect fleeing the area in a light-colored car.

No shots were fired in the incident. It is unknown if there was an accomplice. The home invasion is currently under investigation by the Sheriff’s Criminal Investigations Section.

Police are withholding the name of the victim until they complete their investigation.

The suspect is an unknown male, possibly a white, in his early 20’s, tall, medium build, wearing dark clothes and dark mask covering face.
