Officials on Wednesday continued their search for an elderly Putnam County woman, a day after her husband was found murdered. And investigators are looking into the possibility that the 87-year-old woman was kidnapped.

They also believe the crimes may have occurred as early as Friday.

So far, deputies have no suspect in what they are referring to as a homicide and kidnapping case. And they have not released a motive for the crimes.

The investigation began around 10 a.m. when deputies responded to a home in the Great Waters Community on Lake Oconee in Putnam County, according to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.

Friends of Russell and Shirley Dermond had gone to the couple’s home and discovered the 88-year-old man’s body, Sheriff Howard Sills said in a news release. Investigators said Dermond had been murdered, but they did not say how.

Still, Dermond was reportedly found decapitated in his garage, according to Channel 2 Action News.

Shirley Dermond was not at the residence and investigators believe she may have been abducted, Sills said. But he didn’t say what evidence they found to substantiate that belief. They also believe the crimes occurred sometime between Friday and Sunday.

It's unclear if there were any signs of forced entry to the home and it was also unclear if the couple lived alone.

Shirley Dermond is white, 5 feet, 2 inches tall and weighs 148 pounds. She has grey hair and blue eyes.

Anyone who may have seen Shirley Dermond, or anyone with any information that may be related to of this case, is urged to call the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office in Eatonton at (706) 485-8557.
