Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has changed the series forever and if you don't believe it, just take a look at some gameplay from the upcoming MMO, The Elder Scrolls Online.
In an exclusive hands-on preview of the upcoming game, we got the chance to explore the world of The Elder Scrolls Online, and it was amazing to say the least.
It has been a few years since Skyrim debuted, but it felt like we was playing the same game, only with more people. That is a compliment because Skyrim is one for many developers to take after.
We had the chance to play The Elder Scrolls Online for the first time in first-person and it was terrific. It's just like the experience of playing Skyrim. Personally, first-person provide a more unique experience than third, and is further reason for a lot of people to keep an eye on this game.
The world is extremely beautiful from a first-person perspective. Yes, you can switch between first and third person, but the former was the best experience.
The time we had with the game allowed us to explore and do as we pleased. So with free-roaming being at our discretion, we decided to check out some of the nearest quests by chatting it up with nearby townspeople.
First, we accepted a mission to free a nearby group of soldiers from a spell that had them turned into rodents. They were of course dispersed throughout the map, which is no inconvenience because the world is extremely fun to traverse across.
Along the road we ran into various enemies such as bears, wolves and spiders. Each enemy had their own attack pattern so paying attention to how they would attack you made a difference with how fast you defeated them.
We had to make sure we timed our blocks right, in order to give ourselves the right amount of time to perform a heavy attack on our enemies. Heavy attacks of course do more damage, but they take much longer to execute.
Each person we were coming to rescue had enemies standing in their way to defeat. Again, knowing how to fight against your enemies was crucially important to success. With multiple enemies, it wasn't the smartest idea to go in on your own and take them all on.
Doing so would attract other enemies and would make staying alive, without running away, a difficult challenge. That's where the MMO aspect of playing with your friends comes into play.
Playing with allies certainly allows you to take down enemies quicker, but the one deterrent to fighting alongside friends was the amount of experience you gained was divided up based on how many attacks you had gotten on an enemy.
So for those who choose to go out into the world doing your own quests and missions, you will certainly see leveling up faster than if you were to adventure with friends.
Another mission we took was to get a friend back who had been taken hostage by the Frozen Man. We had to journey to this frozen cave where we found a plethora of bears standing in our way.
There we were also able to accomplish a few other tasks in addition to our main one. Bears were fairly easy to defeat on our own, once you learned how they attacked, but enemies do get more difficult as you level up and play more.
The mission ended up feeling worth it and left us wanting to play more of The Elder Scrolls Online. With a game like this, that's precisely the feeling we want and need to have.
An element of Skyrim that is so closely tied with The Elder Scrolls Online is how many things there are for people to loot in this world. There is literally stuff everywhere for you to collect. If you hoarded in Skyrim, look out, because this game looks to provide no cure to your hoarding behaviors.
Conversation is another important aspect of the game. Simply clicking through responses and not paying attention to them, will take away from a lot of the purpose in the game. It's an aspect of the game that has been given a lot of thought and effort, in addition to all of the looting you can do.
Gameplay hours look to be extremely high with this title and people will be more than getting their money's worth from that standpoint.
This game still needs some more time for polishing and it's good that Bethesda is taking their time with it. But the one thing that will hopefully not drag on, is how long the development process will continue to take.
Overall, The Elder Scrolls Online is looking like it will be a world of fun when it hits sometime next year.
