Elder Panthers varsity basketball downs St. Xavier Bombers

On Friday, the Elder varsity basketball team defeated the St. Xavier Bombers 46-41 at Elder Memorial Fieldhouse.  This was the first Greater Conference League South victory for the 2009-2010 Elder squad.  The Bombers previously defeated the Panthers 66-58 on Jan. 8 at St. X.

Elder led for most of the game, including being up 25-18 at halftime.  Senior forward Alex Welch led the Panthers with 18 points. Junior forward Jordan Murphy also scored nine points for Elder.

For the Bombers, senior guard Alex Longi scored 13 points while senior forward Luke Massa scored 12.

Moeller (12-3; 3-1) is currently in first place in the GCL South, followed by St. X (8-7; 2-2), LaSalle (12-2; 2-2) and Elder (8-7; 1-3).

Elder will face Aiken Tuesday night. The Panthers also have GCL South games against La Salle on Feb. 5 and Moeller on Feb. 19.
