Well, after much speculation the film version of EL James erotic best seller “Fifty Shades of Grey” finally has its leading stars. “Sons of Anarchy” star Charlie Hunnam will play the coveted role of Christian Grey opposite Dakota Johnson’s (“The Social Network”) Anastasia Steele. Hunnam just starred in the summer blockbuster “Pacific Rim” and has been steadily gaining attention for his work. Dakota Johnson is the daughter of actors Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith. The Wrap had reported over a week ago that Dakota was being considered for the role.
For writer EL James, this is a good day. James began her Twitter action today with the teasing post, “Good moaning all. Hold on to your hats.” She then followed that up with the tweet: “I am delighted to let you know that the lovely Dakota Johnson has agreed to be our Anastasia in the film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey.” An hour later, she announced the casting of Hunnam, “So… Christian… The gorgeous and talented Charlie Hunnam will be Christian Grey…”
Later in the day, James tweeted the following spirited post: “To all the supporters, lovers and haters - thank you so much for the passion that you have for this project. You all rock. All of you. ♡”
The story of Fifty Shades of Grey is about a literature student, Anastasia Steele, who becomes involved in a torrid and sexually charged relationship with a handsome, yet tormented, billionaire named Christian Grey. According to Indiewire, The trilogy has been translated in 50 languages worldwide since its release, and has to date sold over 70 million copies worldwide in e-book and print, making it one of the fastest-selling book series ever.
Sam Taylor-Johnson (“Nowhere Boy”) will helm a script adapted by “Terra Nova” writer/producer Kelly Marcel. Notable producers Michael DeLuca and Dana Brunetti are producing the picture. The project is set up at Focus Features and Universal Pictures who will distribute the film theatrically.
The film is scheduled to hit theaters on August 1st, 2014.
