El Bulli: Cooking in Progress – the film

Alive Mind Cinema will be releasing El Bulli: Cooking in Progress which will be starting its national run at the New York’s Film Forum on July 27, 2011. The film will expand into other markets in the US during the fall.

Ferran Adria considered the world’s greatest chef for the new millennium is co-owner of the legendary Spanish restaurant known as El Bulli located in Cala Monjoi, a cove near Roses.  The Michelin three-star restaurant has also received the S. Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurant Award too many time to count. 

July 30th will be the last day at El Bulli as a restaurant although it will re-open as an experimental cooking center in 2014 for the advancement of molecular gastronomy.  All cooking is molecular but this is more a study of the physical and chemical processes that happen when cooking. 

Alive Mind Cinema states, “In this new documentary, audiences have a rare and intimate view of Adrià’s visionary and scientific process – from initial experimentation to the premiere of the finished dish. In the course of developing a new, yearly menu, every selected ingredient is examined in a totally new way, and all ingredients are systematically analyzed: by boiling, roasting, frying, steaming – vacuumizing, spherifying, freeze-drying – and then tasting.

As he demonstrates in the film, Adrià believes that the best results surface in the mysterious realm between the intentional and the accidental, so he closes his restaurant for half of each year to dedicate himself to exploring new ideas with his staff. And that will soon become his full time pursuit.”
