Eighty-three Colorado groups pledge not to kill animals today

JUST ONE DAY - Eighty-three animal rescues and shelters in Colorado will be observing "Just One Day" today, a national event in which organizations have pledged not to euthanize any animals this day to underscore their support for a "no-kill" philosophy in animal care.

The Colorado effort is being coordinated by No Kill Colorado, a nonprofit that seeks to limit euthanasia in the state's shelters. Most shelters believe such a policy will lead to overcrowding and animals being turned away.

This year's format has been changed from last year's a single gathering in Denver to a number of smaller events throughout the state, mostly in pet stores such as Petco.

"For Just One Day," says a posting on No Kill Colorado's website, " 'Euthanasia Technicians' will put down their syringes and pick up cameras. Instead of injecting animals with lethal doses of sodium pentobarbital, they will photograph them and post them on the Internet, on Facebook, on Twitter.

"They will market their animals to the public, they will reach out to rescue groups, they will host adoption events with discounted rates, they will stay open for extended hours, and they will ask their communities to help them empty the shelters."

Lists of event sites and participating animal organizations can be found at
