Bayer HealthCare is introducing a flea-and-tick collar that it says protects cats and dogs for eight months, longer than any other product.
"No other flea or tick preventive on the market provides eight months of effective flea and tick protection with only one single application for both dogs or cats," Bayer official Ian Spinks said.
Bayer announced Jan. 20 that Seresto will be sold in veterinary clinics, pet specialty stores and select online pet pharmacies. The suggested retail price is $70.
The company said Seresto provides the performance of a monthly topical without the hassle of remembering to apply a liquid treatment each month. It said the collar continuously releases a small amount of the active ingredients to the animal’s hair and skin.
After the initial application, the collar kills fleas within 24 hours and ticks within 48 hours, according to Bayer. The collar kills reinfesting fleas within two hours and reinfesting ticks as quickly as six hours.
The product became available in Europe and New Zealand last year.
