At this point, it's safe to say that Deus Ex: Human Revolution was a successful reboot of the long-storied action-RPG franchise. The game boasted a fantastic stealth system, a pair of intricately detailed hub worlds, and a distinctive golden cyberpunk world. It managed to stand out against other shooters on the market simply for slowing things down, for letting players think out and choose which plan of attack they used.
Eidos Montreal has been quiet about what's next for the series - Deus Ex: The Fall was well-received, but fans are waiting for some word on what will be headed to consoles. Eidos gave players some insight alongside the release date for Human Revolution: Director's Cut, and it's not just a sequel.
The concept behind Deus Ex: Universe is to create an ongoing, expanding and connected game world built across a generation of core games. It’s a commitment on our part to deliver meaningful content that expands the franchise on a regular basis and to deliver a deep conspiracy that will span several connected Deus Ex games, creating a more immersive and richer experience than ever before.
No one's going to complain about more Deus Ex (well...this is the internet, so it could happen), but to have an interconnected world full of Deus Ex is a bit more than what people may have been expecting.
On top of that, the post confirmed that work was being done on a next-gen version of Deus Ex:
I’m pleased to confirm that we are already into production of the starting point for Deus Ex: Universe with a new game for PC and next-generation consoles. We’re very excited about it at the studio and I wanted to let you know that most of the team behind Deus Ex: Human Revolution is already working hard on this new game.
It's not a lot, but the single piece of concept art does show that Eidos will be sticking with the augmentation vs. humanism themes of Human Revolution, as opposed to the nanomachine-enhanced soldiers of the original games.
It might still be a ways off, but it's time to get excited about Deus Ex again.
