According to the Hockey Canada website on Sunday, there are three players from the Calgary area that have been chosen for Team Canada at the 2013 Spengler Cup that starts Thursday.
The players are defensemen Travis Ehrhardt and Micki Dupont, who are both Calgary natives, and defenseman Jim Vandermeer, who was born in Caroline, Alberta, an hour north of Calgary.
Vandermeer and Dupont, each former Calgary Flames, currently play for the Kloten Flyers of the Swiss Elite League. While Ehrhardt plays for the Stavanger Oilers in Norway.
Team Canada will look to defend their title in this prestigious international men's hockey tourament. The Canadians defeated HC Davos, the host team from Switzerland 7-2 in the championship final a year ago.
Other notable players on the Canadian squad include former Detroit Red Wings' forward Jason Williams, former Carolina Hurricanes' forward Anthony Stewart and former St. Louis Blues' goaltender Chris Mason. Canada begins the tournament Thursday against the Czech Republic's HC Vitkovice Steel.
