An Observer editorial proclaims that "only democracy can end Egypt’s bloody crises". Really? The fallacy in American foreign policy is that it is based on the idea that democracy is the panacea for world peace. The rationale goes like this: Democracy works wonders for America so it must be the answer for all the global ills. This reasoning is critically flawed.
Another editorial, this time from The Telegraph, proclaims that "Egypt... needs true democracy , not a dictatorship of the majority". True enough, but it only highlights the danger of democracy, which is creating tyranny of the majority and it is most dangerous when governance is mixed with the fervor of the religious.
When democracy installed Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood-led regime, it predictably moved the country towards a Sunni theocracy that would not allow constructive dissent, only zealous enforcement of divine dictum. No debates permitted so democracy in such a country effectively snuff out individual liberties and revolution is the only voice of the oppressed..
America and the West in general has a long history of backing dubious Islamist groups in the middle east, often because they are in the majority and in the spirit of democracy should rule, never mind that they represent religious majority, not the will of the free. This scenario can be told of Libya, Syria, and now Egypt.
Libya is now considered an "electoral democracy" following the "arab spring" and demise of Gaddafi, who for better or worse, led a stable Libya for 42 years with a secular rule. It could be argued that his downfall started in 1973 when he merged civil and sharia courts and installed sharia judges to decide based on Islamic laws. Time will only tell if the new government will survive.
The year 1973 is also significant in Syria when a new constitution was created with the provision, " The religion of the President of the Republic has to be Islam. Islamic jurisprudence is a main source of legislation". With separation of church and state shattered and religious freedom quashed, democracy may not saved this self-proclaimed secular state.
Democracy works in America because after the revolution, the founding fathers had the foresight to establish a Republic based on the genius of a Constitution that binds the country and serves everyone. Separation of church and state is required and individual liberty and freedom deemed sacred. The government and the governed are one and the same and free men and women create laws they are bound to serve and obey. Democracy is not the country’s reason for being, it is just the vehicle to create laws through freely elected representatives. It is not the solution, only the best means to serve our constitutional republic where the Rule of Law rules.
Let’s export the Rule of Law, Religious Freedom, and Separation of Church and State and let countries select political system to serve it, with democracy as a choice.
