Egg cartons make love bug Valentines

Children exchange valentines and candy with their friends and classmates. These love bug Valentines are easy to make. You will need

  • Pink or white Styrofoam egg cartons
  • Scissors
  • Construction paper or fun foam hearts
  • Pipe cleaners or wire twist ties
  • Conversation hearts or other small candy
  • Plastic sandwich bags without zippers
  • All purpose or tacky glue
  • Styrofoam packing peanuts
  • Cellophane tape

Cut egg cartons into individual cups. Trim the edges until the sides of the cup are even all the way around. Use a sharp object, such as a pencil or knitting needle to make six holes in the sides; three on the right and three on the left, along the rim.

Put a tablespoon of candy into a plastic bag. Fold the bag so that it will fit inside the cup. Use clear cellophane tape to attach the bag to the inside of the cup.

Cut pipe cleaners into pieces that are three to four inches long. Twist ties from trash bags or bread sacks can also be used. If the twist ties are too short, twist two of them together to make a longer wire. Push three pieces through the holes to make legs on the outside of the cup. The wires will span the open side of the cup, keeping the bag of candy inside.

Cut small hearts from construction paper, or use peel and stick fun foam heart shapes. Glue one heart on each side of the cup for wings. Place the hearts so that the point on the bottom of the heart is pointing to the head of the bug.

Cut Styrofoam packing peanuts into half-inch pieces. Glue two pieces to the front of the bug to make eyes. Eyes can also be made from the small circles used to reinforce holes in note book paper, pompoms, or circles of paper.
