INo (c) ~Ian Ang "Pug at a shelter awaiting adoption"
In the past Effingham County has had a Director of Animal Control that has taken care of the Animal Control duties. Effingham County has gone through two Directors in the past year. This has raised some concern for Effingham County Sheriff’s Department and the Effingham County Commissioners. The county has been in discussions to see what would be the best way to approach this matter and try to get a handle on the ever growing need for animal control.
The Effingham County Commissioners have approved funding for two sheriff deputies to take over the animal control duties. These officers will receive special training that is specific to animal control. These officers will be conduct themselves with Peace Officer Standards which allows them to handle other law enforcement duties if needed. By having an actual officer as animal control it allows the officer to go through the entire court process if the case needs to go to court, where as before, the animal control director did not go to court.
Since in the past Sheriff Jimmy McDuffie has had to send three or four deputies out to help with an animal control matter, the commissioners are aware they may be asked to approve another deputy in the near future. With this restructuring of Effingham County Animal Control, there will be a shelter manager and part-time kennel assistants to help with the new officers. They will handle the day-to-day tasks at the Effingham County Shelter and take care of any cases the officers bring to the facility.
