Effectively using social media for job search

Depending on what generation transitioning job seekers in Phoenix may be from, there may be apprehension or denial about when, where, and how to use social media in the job search process.  Online tools like Facebook© and LinkedIn© are not going away and have become important sources of information for both the candidate and the employer.  Here are some ideas to add to your current use or ways to think about using these programs to maximize your approach:

  1. Do I need to have a Facebook© or LinkedIn© page?  It depends – are you interviewing in a field that involves knowledge of technology or is integrating social media into the workplace?  Do you have an extensive background with skills in various areas where a profile page could allow you to be found by employers and provide work examples?
  2. What extra value can a LinkedIn© page provide?  Because it is the world’s largest professional networking site, there are multiple ways to maximize use of this tool.  Connecting with current and former work, volunteer, and organization colleagues and supervisors can provide a venue to secure recommendations and make contacts with potential employers.
  3.  How is the information on those sites different from anything else I may find on the internet?  Social media sites could be updated more frequently than a company’s website.  Information on those sites can include upcoming events, current industry trends, and cutting edge processes/products/services the company provides.  Some companies even have Jobs or Careers pages on these sites that include the most current listings.

Employers are using social media to communicate to potential candidates and to find candidates with skills matching their needs.  Phoenicians who can utilize these tools to represent the value they can provide to organizations will also show their willingness to stay on top of the latest modalities for communication and professional networking.
