Expectations were high in 2013 for the Jackson Central Merry football team under coach Martez Edwards.
Now expectations are still high but it will be without Edwards who has been relieved of his duties by JCM principal Eric Jones.
"We just decided to go in a different direction as a school and program," Jones said.
Edwards who had a 7-14 record in his two years as JCM coach had revived the Cougar program as they made a Class 3A playoff appearance in 2012.
In 2011, when Edwards took the program over JCM struggled with a 2-8 record, but improved to win five games and make the playoffs in 2012.
The Cougars are returning 16 starters from the 2012 team and was ranked No. 10 in Examiner.com's Class 3A Spring Top 10 released last week.
Coaches in and around Jackson had pointed to the 2013 season as the year of JCM and that Edwards had done a fantastic job turning the program around.
"I think we have turned a corner and we can be really good this year we just have to keep working hard," Edwards said last week.
