Finding a good school fit for a gifted child can be difficult enough. When that child is twice exceptional (gifted with a learning disability or other exceptionality), getting an appropriate education becomes even more challenging. Classes for gifted and talented children often include a large number of students, many of whom are high achieving and whose main need is for a traditional classroom setting with harder or faster paced work.
Gifted children, especially twice exceptional children, may need different more than faster. Twice exceptional children may also find themselves overwhelmed by sensory input in large classrooms and targeted by bullies because they stand out as atypical even in classes designed for high ability students.
The Temple Grandin School (TGS) in north Boulder was founded specifically for these children. A private school which focuses on small classes and individualized attention, TGS has a particular interest in serving the needs of intellectually gifted middle and high schoolers who are on the autism spectrum. While not all of TGS' student have autism spectrum disorders, daily support for developing social and organizational skills is built into the day for students with Asperger's Syndrome and similar challenges.
TGS will be hosting an open house this upcoming Monday, January 9, 2012 for prospective students.
Where: 6646 Jay Road, Boulder, Colorado
When: 6:30 p.m.
