According to the Canadian Press on Monday, Edmonton will be bidding for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The Games are significant because they will be a major preparation event for many high performance Canadian athletes leading up to the 2024 Olympic Games and if the 2022 Commonwealth Games are in Canada, do not be surprised if many high performance Canadian athletes will decide to continue to compete after the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Edmonton has hosted the Commonwealth Games before--in 1978, and their major football stadium is named Commonwealth Stadium. The stadium also hosted the 2001 International Association of Athletics Federations World Championship and will host many games at the 2015 Women's World Cup of Soccer.

Edmonton is up against Durban, South Africa. The Commonwealth Games has never been on the African continent before. The host site will be decided in Auckland, New Zealand in September, 2015.

Canada has hosted the Commonwealth Games four times before--in 1930 in Hamilton, in 1954 in Vancouver, 1978 in Edmonton and in 1994 in Victoria.

The 2014 Commonwealth Games are in Glasgow, Scotland and the 2018 Commonwealth Games are in Gold Coast, Australia.
