The Colorado Mammoth opened the 2013-2014 season against their rivals the Edmonton Rush on Saturday December 28, 2013. During the off season, the Colorado Mammoth made some big changes. They traded transition Ilija Gajic to Vancouver for faceoff specialist Bob Snider. The Colorado Mammoth made an exchange with Philadelphia Wings and sent Ryan Hotaling in exchange for offense support in Drew Westervelt. Westervelt is a scoring machine by scoring 27 or more goals in each season. Also no longer with the team is Gavin Prout or Casey Powell.
Unfortunately, these did not help with going against Edmonton Rush last night at the Pepsi Center. The Colorado Mammoth came out strong and put up the first goal within the first minute. That was followed up by a quick goal about two minutes later. Edmonton Rush answered with a goal and the game looked to be a good one. It was hard fought with third-year forward Adam Jones leading the Colorado Mammoth with four goals, John Grant Jr. contributing with three goals. Additional scoring by Mat MacLeod, Jamie Lincoln and Drew Westervelt helped lift the Mammoth closer to opening night being a success. But Edmonton Rush poured it on in the fourth quarter and came out the victors.
Colorado Mammoth coach Bob Hamley said “I’m disappointed, we had a good training camp and I thought they were ready. We made some mental mistakes and we will have to regroup and figure it out.”
The night was also a homecoming for Edmonton Rush forward Mark Matthews. Edwards played lacrosse for University of Denver.
