Editors Candace Walsh and Laura Andre are looking for the stories of women who have left men to be with other women. The personal essays are for their new book, And Then It Shifted: Women Open Up About Leaving Men for Women (Seal Press, 2010).
It’s a topic that has been in the news especially after talk show host Oprah Winfrey dedicated a show to it.
Actresses Cynthia Nixon and Portia deRossi (who married comedian Ellen Degeneres), and comedians Carol Leifer and Wanda Sykes are among the best known celebrities who have moved from heterosexual relationships to same-sex relationships.
The editors say that the book will evolve as they receive submissions, they are seeking diverse and varied first-person essays from women who:
- Were aware that they had always felt robust same-sex desires, but wanted to try to make it work in the straight world
- Identified as heterosexual at one time, but found that the situation they were in just naturally led to embarking on an intimate romantic relationship with a woman.
Deadline for entries is December 1, 2009 and accepted stories will receive payment on publication. Read the complete call for submissions for more details and guidelines.
Walsh is the editor of Ask Me About My Divorce: Women Open Up About Moving On (Seal Press, 2009). She is also the features editor at Mothering magazine, and has a blog at mothering.com.
