What a terrible time it has been for our animals in the United States!
Just when I think the situation cannot get much worse for the animals in the West, I hear more, read more and find new atrocities being planned or occurring. In my neck of the woods, there has been wholesale slaughter of Canadian geese, dubbed the new “rat.” Our precious wild mustangs are really under siege. Are the “powers to be” really going to turn THE old cattle slaughterhouse into a horse butchering facility?
Leave the horses alone. Humans have made a complete mess of the situation already. Some years ago, a contraception program enlisting help from horsemen and volunteers would have helped the horses fare better than stockpiling them in barren pens. Of course it’s not a quick fix, but it is a fix that is kinder and ultimately vastly better than butchering, and all the other fixes.
But today’s ramblings aren’t about just our American heritage horses. Oh no, there is a whole lot of evil underfoot.
How about the gun dude who sponsors killing contests! He thinks it’s great sport to use prairie dogs for target practice and awards prizes to their killers. Great sport. Wait until the whole gang is foraging and shoot them all or have even more fun. Wait until their heads pop up and blow them off.
And his vendetta against coyotes? Big time contest and prizes to kill coyotes. Let’s not even talk about wolves or burros or the birds. And let us not talk about prize exotic animals raised or donated for big money that are released and immediately shot as trophies.
Bears are being shot in New Mexico in large numbers. Great treatment of their state mammal.
But if none of this has incensed you yet, how about this next tidbit – Hundreds of the previously declared endangered desert tortoises are now on death watch. Yes, death! This is at the hands of the very group who were charged to rescue and care for the desert tortoise and to keep them safe.
Officials at the Desert Tortoise Conservation Center plan to close shop and KILL hundreds of tortoises because the funding source that has kept the reserve outside Las Vegas, Nevada, open since 1990 is running dry. The Bureau of Land Management has paid for the holding and research facility with fees imposed on developers who disturb tortoise habitat.
Of the 1,400 tortoises safely kept at the center, half of them will be killed. They will not be released back into the wild since humans have decided many are pets and cannot survive in the desert. So they choose killing – or that famous word “euthanasia” – that is being thrown around when “humane slaughter” or “humane death” is considered. Killing these tortoises is plain evil and is permanent, irreversible, and unconscionable.
Where is the thought process of individuals in the federal bureaucracy whose salaries we pay. Has everyone simply gone daft?
Work the problem. Call in people from the public in the know to help this situation and others. No more blunders, no killing, no choices or “solutions” that are just plain evil.
