Edison Ford Estates celebrates Thomas Edison's 167th birthday on February 11

The Edison & Ford Winter Estates is celebrating the 167th birthday of Thomas Edison on February 11, 2014 with staff, distinguished guests and students from Edison Park School for the Creative and Expressive Arts who will perform music from the Edison era. The performance begins at 10 a.m. with cake to follow.

After the celebrations visitors can join the Edisons, Fords, and community leaders for a historic ground breaking of the new Edison Ford Museum West Porch. The birthday celebration is free to the public, and the event is co-sponsored by Edison Pageant of Light.

Visitors can celebrate Edison’s birthday throughout the month with regular tours led by Edison Ford historians; audio tours in English, German, French and Spanish; Museum and Lab tours; and Museum demonstrations throughout the day. Along with daily tours, Edison Ford offers special tours throughout the week including:

Sundays: Inside the Lab Hands-On Science is a behind the scene program inside the lab and museum that includes demonstrations with inventions and hands-on activities featuring Edison and Ford inventions. (Audio tour included.)

Wednesdays:

  • Garden & Estates Tour led by Edison Ford horticulturists which includes practical home gardening, historic garden tips and tour of the organic garden areas, propagation nursery and nearly 25 acres of historic gardens and homes on the river. (Audio tour included.)
  • River Cruise and Edison Ford Tour includes a boat cruise along the Caloosahatchee River and site historian OR audio tour of the Edison and Ford estates homes, garden, lab and museum. (Program begins February 26, 2014).
  • Historian Led German Tour is a German language tour of the homes, gardens, lab and museum with a site historian. (Audio tour included.)

Thursdays: Behind the Scenes Tour takes you inside the Edison and Ford homes with curators. (Audio tour included.)

Saturdays: Edison Ford Mucker/Young Inventor’s Tour is for children of all ages and includes hands-on program including a Ford Model T, making polymer, demonstration with inventions and much more.

Group Tours can be scheduled any day of the week with advanced reservations. Groups of 20 or more people will receive a discounted group rate. Call 239-334-7419 and ask about lunch and custom options for groups.

The Edison Ford is open daily from 9:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. The Edison Ford is the winner of the 2009 National Stewardship Award from the National Trust for Historic Preservation and is an official project of “Save America’s Treasures” at the National Trust for Historic Preservation, a Florida Historic Landmark and a National Register Historic Site.
