The 2014 MSHSL final game between the defending Class AA Champion Edina Hornets and the Lakeville North Panthers got underway shortly after 7:00 in the evening on March 8, 2014.
The game featured the number one seed (Edina) and the number two seed (Lakeville North) just as the Division A final had, between East Grand Forks and Hermantown. Just as in the Class A tournament earlier in the day, the higher seed ran away with the game in the second period. Edina emerged victorious by the score of 8-2.
The Hornets and Panthers traded even strength goals to open the game. Edina picked up the next two goals and Lakeville North’s Max Johnson scored the Panther’s second, and final, goal of the game at the 14:36 point in the first period. At the end of 1 the Hornets led the Panthers 3-2.
The Hornets scored three more goals in the second period and two in the third to win by a score of 8-2.
The key to Edina’s victory was their sharp, crisp passing that left the Panther defense unable to stop the relentless attack. This is Edina’s second title in as many years. The Hornets will lose six seniors but appear to have a strong group of young talent who will attempt to go for three in the 2015 Tournament. Lakeville is losing five seniors and will have a strong senior class returning next year. Maybe we will see a re-match between Lakeville North and Edina at some point in next year’s tournament.
