Eddie Murphy has officially resigned as host of the 2012 Academy Awards following the news that Brett Ratner dropped out as producer on the heels of his controversial interview on the Howard Stern Show.
Murphy made the announcement that he's dropping out as Oscars host via a statement released by the Academy Wednesday morning:
“First and foremost I want to say that I completely understand and support each party’s decision with regard to a change of producers for this year’s Academy Awards ceremony,” Murphy said in statement released by the Academy today. “I was truly looking forward to being a part of the show that our production team and writers were just starting to develop, but I’m sure that the new production team and host will do an equally great job.”
Murphy's announcement comes just 24 hours after director Brett Ratner resigned as producer of next year's Oscars. Ratner's resignation was the result of backlash he received after using a gay slur at a screening of his new film 'Tower Heist,' followed by his tell-all interview on the Howard Stern Show where he revealed intimate sexual details about his relationships with Lindsay Lohan and Rebecca Gayheart.
