Texas State University will host the Eddie Durham ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eddie_Durham )Jazz Festival in Evans Auditorium on Feb. 3 at 7:30pm. The event is free and open to the public.
Durham ( www.durhamjazz.com) was a native of San Marcos who is widely credited with being the pioneer of amplified guitar. He was a big influence on Charlie Christian, a fellow Texan who is considered by many to be one of the most important guitarists in the history of jazz. Durham worked with many of the times' swing bands, including some of the early groups of Count Basie.
This year's celebration, which is a part of the Hill Country Jazz Festival and presented by the Department of Jazz Studies in the Texas State School of Music and the Center for Texas Music History, will include lectures, guest artists, and performances by Texas State students.
Jazz historian Dan Morgenstern ( http://www.allaboutjazz.com/journalists/morgenstern.htm )will present a lecture on the achievements and legacy of Eddie Durham. Tenor Saxophonist Doug Lawrence ( http://www.douglawrencejazz.com/ )of the Count Basie Orchestra and Guggenheim Fellow bassist Rufus Reid ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rufus_Reid )will also perform.
