Ed Koch, former New York City mayor, dead at 88

According to the New York Post, Ed Koch – the former three-term mayor of New York City – passed away at the age of 88 on Friday morning.

In the recent past, Koch has been plagued by a fluid build-up around his lungs which has caused difficulty in his breathing and speech which has landed him in the hospital repeatedly. On Thursday afternoon, he was put in the intensive care unit at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

With his extremely gutsy-imaged, he is the politician credited with freeing New York City from the past threat of bankruptcy.

Full-named Edward Irving “Ed” Koch was born Dec. 12, 1924 and became an American lawyer, politician, and political commentator who served in the United States House of Representatives from 1969 to 1977 prior to becoming the mayor of the biggest city in the United States – New York City - from 1978 to 1989.

Koch was also known to television judge program fans via “The People’s Court” where he was a judge from 1997 to 1999.
