While the summer sizzles, fall is a little less extreme in Las Vegas, but only because of the reduced temperature. There are still a lot of hot things to do. If the weather is agreeable, the Las Vegas outdoors scene is happening.
For a family outdoor adventure, a stroll through the gardens at the Springs Preserve is a great option. Pathways go through water efficient landscaping and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum certified buildings. This means an extraordinary effort went into the construction of the facility. Construction waste was kept to a minimum, recycled products were used in the building material and several energy efficient systems were installed to maximize cooling in the summer and warming in the winter. Even the building's positions were calculated to take advantage of sun and shade seasonally. The structures covering the parking lot are the park's solar panels producing electricity from Las Vegas' ample supply of sunny days. Best of all, the gardens are beautiful. Enjoy local and exotic, but all water efficient plants, along the paths. For an extended hike, visit the extensive trail system they have at the back of the property that guides you past historical ruins and preserved buildings from the beginning of Las Vegas. Visit a green destination and fill your cupboards with locally produced products and support local artisans and farmers to boot. Buying local and supporting local farmers is a recognized sustainable practice and tastes good too. The Las Vegas Farmer's Market is a great stop to or from any of the west side destinations and will add to your snack bin for a day trip perfectly. The Las Vegas Farmer's Market features locally grown produce (locally includes California), craftsman, bakeries, hot dog stands, pizza stands, snow cones and treats. Some non-profit and for profit companies also have information booths about products and services.
Items to look for include roasted corn, fresh nuts, caramel popcorn and treats from Sasa Sweets - all worth a stop. Check out the authentic hand crafted European style breads and cakes. The Farmer's Market often has blood oranges, asparagus, beets, leaf greens, nuts, pasta, salad mix, fresh cut flowers, bedding plants, avocados, squash, pomelos and bok choy. Local artisans and artists with hand made arts and crafts including hand created custom jewelry.
When the market is on Vegas Drive and Rampart, it makes a perfect cooler loading stop for and evening drive through Red Rock Canyon. It is practically on the way and it will serve as a great kids stop out to give them a break out of the car. The park has a great play ground and it is a good diversion and rest from the hussle and bussle of a Vegas local's life or the hectic pace of a Vegas vacationer.
