For many, the holiday season has end and their focus is presently a New Year. So, why continue a topic theme of gift giving? Remember the holiday song – On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me? Many cultures and traditions start their holiday on Christmas day and celebrate for 12 days ending on January 5th.
In the spirit of this expanded celebration, let’s make the ‘gift of plow’ a 12 day opportunity to explore eco knowledge. On day 1, the gift is to acquire a general understanding of why a ‘gift of plow’ is important. On day 2, ‘put on your green glasses, plug in. Day 3’s gift is a focus of eco literacy ; and day 4, the opportunity to identify eco education for yourself and others. Having acquired a basic understanding of a ‘gift of plow’, let’s move forward with selecting activities, products and services.
On day 6, subscribe your self and/or others to my ongoing tips and strategies column. Chose, on day 7, to implement a 4 Ps strategy avoiding a negative impact on the environment. Recognize, on day 8, the value trees, habitat. Acquire, on day 9, a workbook guideline and create a site plan. Identify, on day 10, guidelines that create sustainable landscape gardens. On day 11, understand the value of legacy, heritage plants. And, on day 12, apply the wealth of knowledge gathered through day 1 to 11 gifts and plant more plants.
Whether in the spirit of the holiday season or a New Year resolution or ongoing life-style commitments, join in a quest to green life’s garden one scoop at a time. Give gifts that encourage others to acquire eco education: reflect ‘plow, not hearth’. For as gardeners, we not only have the opportunity to make a difference through personal choices but can influence others to create an eco-legacy of healthy green space, both rural and urban.
