Eco-Camping among the vineyards in Bordeaux, France

I am reporting to you from the heart of Bordeaux wine country in France, where I have been enjoying several days of a press trip to attend the wine festival here. But first I visited a peaceful, unique spot run by a lovely couple, that I wanted to share.

Simply Canvas is a gorgeous spot in the Duras wine region, that offers both extremely large, comfortable tents as well as a full house for rent. It's run by Sandra and Santi, a couple who just married a few weeks ago and are entering their second tourist season with Simply Canvas.

Here, you can rent one of the tents by the week, a room or the entire house - and experience this little spot of paradise in France. Simply Canvas is ecologically friendly - a philosophy that is important to both Santi and Sandra. The couple met while both living at a nearby Buddhist monastery for several years, and their principles of simplicity and respect for the earth carry over into the quiet way they run Simply Canvas, which is obviously a labor of love for them.

They try to make the site as green as possible, from the organic garden to the well water and solar power used. Recycling and composting are of course the practice, and the inviting swimming pool is saltwater that is naturally filtered by plants. The rates include breakfast, and guests can also enjoy dinner prepared by the couple, using their own fruits and vegetables as well as those locally sourced. They also offer workshops such as yoga and wine tastings, and have a special focus on families. Kids love Santi, as Sandra told me, and there are always lots of fun activities geared toward the young guests.

One aspect that I especially liked was their philosophy on supporting social causes. Santi was born in Laos, although his family moved to France when he was only a baby. He and Sandra visited the country several years ago and met a man who ran a non-profit to help street children. Since that time, they have supported two organizations supporting children in Laos, and also invite their guests to donate toys or books which are shipped to Laos for the children.

Nearby to Simply Canvas are great places to visit on holiday, from the 12th century castle of Duras, to of course dozens of wonderful vineyards and winemakers. For an incredible vacation like no other, that is good for both the environment and your soul, I invite you to check out Simply Canvas.

Simply Canvas rates run from 680-1450 Euros per week, including breakfast. For more information, visit the Simply Canvas website.
