Over the weekend, Eckerd College hosted a charity Rugby tournament to raise money for the Stand Up Foundation. In addition to raising at least $200, both the men’s and women’s teams defeated their opponents. The Eckerd College Men (Tritons) defeated Florida Gulf Coast University 33-7. Leslie Claridge, Micheal Best, Issac Anderson, Ben Weiskopf, and Nigel Hammond each scored one try. Team captain Julian Buck successfully converted four of the five tries.
The Eckerd College Women (Sirens) defeated their across the bay rivals, the University of South Florida Women Bulls 41-25. Briana Ballard led the match in scoring with two tries. Amy Mautz, Liz Scherbatskoy, Sierra Voss, Lauren Van Woudenberg and Kristina Krajcik each scored a try as well. The Woman of the Match award went to Sierra Voss.
USF men travel to Miami
The University of South Florida Men’s Bulls Club traveled to Miami on Saturday to take on Florida International University. Though the Bulls played an inspired game, they came up a little short in the end, losing by a score of 25-15. Nick Weaver, who scored all three of the Bulls’ tries on Saturday, won Man of the Match for the Bulls.
St. Pete Pelicans host Naples
The St. Petersburg Pelicans hosted the Naples Hammerheads over the weekend at Coquina State Park on Saturday. On the cool breezy day, the Pelicans were unable to defeat the Hammerheads, who had traveled about two hours north on I-75. However, this is just the beginning of the 2011-2012 Rugby Season, so it is likely the Pelicans will have another chance to avenge their defeat.
Krewe travels to Atlanta and Orlando
The Tampa Bay Krewe D-I team traveled to Atlanta to play the Life University Super League side on Saturday. Life University has one of the top Super League teams in the nation (Super League is the level above Division I), and the team used its talent and power to defeat the Krewe. Daragh Carr scored a try for the D-I Krewe in its loss to Life.
The Krewe D-II side drove an hour and a half up I-4 to take on Orlando. The breezy conditions affected play for both teams, but in the end Orlando was victorious over the Krewe. Scrum-half Agustin Pombo de Erezcano successfully converted a penalty kick for the Krewe in its loss to Orlando.
