The Ector County Independent School District spends some big bucks on advertising for 2013-2014 school year and some are saying it's a waste of money for the city of Odessa.
ECISD signed a contract to spend $100,000 on advertising for the calendar school year. The school administration says it's needed so more information can be released for the community to see what is going on involving Odessa's schools.
The town is divided on this issue. Some are saying it's a wise investment and will pay off in the end. Others are saying it's a waste and that the schools are busting at the seams due to the economy being in a boom stage here in Odessa. There is no reason to spend that kind of money when there is no more space for new students moving into Odessa, Texas.
Others are saying what happen to just using e-mail or sending notes home with the students if parents needs to be notified of upcoming events.
The school administration is standing by their decision by pointing out that the local hospitals and colleges spend that kind of dollar amount for advertising so it should be no difference for ECISD to spend it. Some pointed out that the local hospitals and colleges are offering a service for payment and the last time they looked children weren't being charged to attend local schools.
Most agree this kind of money could be spent other places, such as fixing repairs that need to be done. Teachers could be reimbursed for using their own money to buy supplies. More aides could be hired to help in the classrooms. The list goes on and on what the community is saying about where the money would be better spent.
The one thing the community does agree on, this will not be a discussion that will go away anytime soon.
