There are currently people in 17 states that are unable to use their EBT debit cards to purchase food at grocery stores as of 9 AM October 12 Saturday morning.
Grocery stores in California, particularly here in Oakhurst and Mariposa, have signs throughout the stores informing EBT users of the situation.
It has been blamed on a computer glitch after a routine check by vendor Xerox Corp. resulted in a system failure.
"While the system is now up and running, beneficiaries in the 17 affected states continue to experience connectivity issues to access their benefits. Technical staff is addressing the issue and expect the system to be restored soon," reported Fox News.
Many have suspected this is due to the government shutdown but this is not the case according to a U.S. Department of Agriculture spokeswoman, Courtney Rowe.
People calling the customer service line were being told to call back later.
State officials said they were preparing a statement to further explain the issue.
