On Wednesday, the popular online auction site known as Ebay disclosed information about a cyber-attack to their online services. The company reported that so far no financial records or sensitive information were accessed. Ebay is now urging all users to change their passwords. Ebay first released information about the attack on their web blog and countless news sites are now picking up the warning. According to Ebay, the attack occurred sometime in February or March. It is not known when the company first discovered the attack. With over 110 million users, Ebay is working to spread warnings about the vulnerability through a myriad of online methods. The company has also asked users to change their passwords to Paypal.com. So far no related Paypal accounts appear to have been compromised. According to Ebay, Paypal.com uses a different server with strong encryption methods but users should still use caution.

To avoid any potential security problems, here are instructions for changing a password for an Ebay account:

  1. Sign into www.ebay.com
  2. Click on “My Ebay” in the upper right side of the screen
  3. Click on “Account” under “My Ebay”
  4. Select “Personal Information” under the left menu
  5. Click on “Edit” on the password line
  6. Sign in with your present credentials
  7. Enter your old password and the new password twice.
  8. Click on “Submit

To change a password on Paypal.com, follow these instructions:

  1. Log into www.paypalcom
  2. Click on “My Account”
  3. Hover the mouse cursor over “Profile”
  4. Select “Update Password”
  5. Click on “Password”
  6. Answer any security questions that appear
  7. Enter your old password and a new password twice
  8. Click on “Save”

After changing your password, always be sure to avoid any phishing emails that may be sent by malicious third parties that misdirect embedded links in email messages. Ebay is among a number of corporations that have experienced cyber-attacks on their networks and the trend is certain to continue. Perhaps the best security for now is to use strong, complex passwords that utilize a mixture of characters and symbols. Ideally any password should be changed frequently for added security. Unfortunately, Ebay users may have to wait to see if there are any further updates to the situation or if any information was accessed.
