Ebay founder Pierre Omidyar is one of the richest men in the world according to Forbes Billionaires list, Mar, 4, 2013. Omidyar, a Hawaii resident, has an estimated net worth of $8.7 billion which places his number at number 123 on Forbes' global wealth list and number 42 in the U.S.
Omidyar founded Ebay in 1995. The 45-year-old French born, Iranian-American, attended high school in Honolulu, sharing the same alma mater as President Barack Obama, Punahou School. Omidyar is very active in his philanthropy efforts giving back to communities statewide through his charitable projects.
Lanai, island owner and Oracle founder Larry Ellison topped Omidyar on the Forbes list making the rankings at number five overall, with a net worth of $43 billion.
Hawaii landowners and part-time residents Michael Dell of the Dell computer empire and talk show mega-star Oprah Winfrey are on the list. Winfrey is number 503 with a net worth of $2.8 billion and Dell is number 49 with a net worth of $14.3 billion.
Pacific Business News reports, "Omidyar has pledged to give $50 million to the Hawaii Community Foundation, and their Ulupono Initiative has gotten involved with everything from food sustainability to solar energy projects."
