Eating Healthy At Applebee’s

Applebee's has always been that all-time favorite restaurant loved by many, and for good reason. Applebee’s offers healthy lower calorie options with the 550 calories or less line and the Weight Watchers endorsed products.

The menu at Detroit’s local Applebee's offers:

Roma Pepper Steak for 13 Points Plus

Lemon Parmesan Shrimp for 13 Points Plus

Chicken Freshcado for 11 Points Plus

These were some favorites that are no longer available:

Paradise Chicken Salad for 6 Points

Steak and Portobello’s for 7 Points

Garlic Herb Chicken for 7 Points

Cajun Lime Tilapia for 7 Points

Italian Chicken and Portobello Sandwich for 7 Points

They also offer as part of their new ‘apple’ heart healthy line less than 550 calories:

Signature Sirloin with Garlic Herb Shrimp

Savory Cedar Salmon

Napa Chicken and Portobello’s

Strawberry Avocado Salad

Thai Shrimp Salad

There used to be a much larger selection of Weight Watcher endorsed items but they are slowly fading away. The last time Detroit Healthy Food Examiner was at the local Applebee's the Weight Watchers French Onion Soup was still available but it was no longer on the menu. The waiter discussed that many old menu items can still be made if one were to just ask.

The Applebee's website has a PDF file of their menu. It will list the nutritional content of each item. This is extremely useful for anyone wanting to watch calories or count points. The website menu seems to have everything listed per your location.

Soup or salad is a wonderful and a great way to start a meal. Order your dressing on the side and dip your fork before dipping for salad. You will get the entire flavor without all of the calories. Eating a broth based soup and a vegetable-loaded salad will help keep calories down. Order an appetizer or ask to share the main meal.

Another healthy tip is to ask for a box as soon as your order comes. Put half in the box for later.

The wonderful thing about Applebee’s is that they will customize pretty much anything on the menu. That makes customers feel warm and welcomed. It’s nice to not be made to feel weird for custom order. At some restaurants they really do not make it easy for you and make you feel bad for even asking

We are very sad to see the Weight Watchers Cajun Lime Tilapia and the Steak and Portobello’s leave our local menu. The only fish hanging around these days is salmon. The Roma Pepper Steak is a close alternative to the original Steak and Portobello.

Whatever you are in the mood for, check out your local Applebee’s for great service and healthy food options. Don’t be afraid to ask for what you want.
