It may be possible that this is due to the increased focus on body image and obesity. Headlines have been emphasizing the need to reduce obesity. With so much pressure in society to be "thin", there has been a rise in the number of documented cases of eating disorders.
It is important for society to be aware of signs and symptoms of eating disorders. Family, teachers, and medical staff definitely need to be educated. The outcome of long term eating disorders is dangerous and if left untreated, could result in death.
Fitness guru, Richard Simmons, has been quoted as saying "the first three letters of diet spell die." That is why it is important for everyone to realize the need for healthy lifestyles. Eating balanced meals and moderate exercise are essential for maintaining a reasonable body weight. Overall, a person needs to be healthy instead of placing the focus on a number on a scale.
If it is suspected that someone is suffering from an eating disorder, early treatment is the key to recovery. A physician can direct families in seeking treatment. Treatment may include therapy, a food plan from a trained dietician, and monitoring of the person's health via blood tests.
With the rise in the prevelance of eating disorders in children, society needs to increase awareness. Children are our future. We must safeguard their health.
