Here are some quick ideas for keeping your New Year's resolution to eat more healthfully and lose weight in 2010:
-
Eat smaller portions. Grab a serving of whatever it is you're eating and put away the rest (no eating out of the bag!). -
Add at least one new food to your diet every week. -
Limit alcohol intake to 2-3 glasses per week. Eat out less often. -
Purchase "ingredients" at the market rather than "prepared" foods. Stick to the perimeter of the supermarket (the outer aisles where you find the deli, bread, dairy, meat, and produce) where the "ingredients" are - skip the aisles, which contain "prepared" foods that are more processed, contain more chemicals, are less nutritious and are packed with calories, fat and sugar. -
Try to have at least three colors on your plate - an easy way to ensure you consume a better variety of vitamins and minerals. -
Skip dessert, or better yet, eat fruit. -
Add nuts, cheese, and dried fruit to your diet (just a handful a day though!). -
Drink more water. -
Limit fruit juice consumption to 1 glass a day, and STOP drinking soda (at the very least, switch to diet). -
Plan your weekly menu and stick to it. -
Eat a nutritious breakfast (try a bowl of whole grain cereal, or egg and whole-wheat toast, or fruit and yogurt).
