Eat four tablespoons of vinegar for health!

A recent airing of a Dr. Oz show had the handsome and charismatic Dr. Mehmet Oz recommending that we ingest four tablespoons of vinegar per day to maintain our health!

Now there’s much that has been written about the health benefits of apple cider vinegar – the natural undistilled variety especially – but this particular Dr. Oz show touted that value of any type of vinegar at all – I suppose even balsamic or sweet rice wine vinegar qualify though they seem to be a bit higher in sugar content.

Let’s take a look at the value at each type of vinegar:

Apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar has to be placed at the very top for nutritional value, with uses from reduce water retention, throat gargle, weight loss to treating nail fungus. It is also high in calcium, magnesium, phosphorous and potassium. It apparently contains no carbohydrates and very few calories.

Red wine vinegar

Red wine vinegar apparently has significant vitamin C, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorous and potassium, yet it contains no carbohydrates but is somehow sweeter than apple cider vinegar.

Balsamic vinegar

Balsamic vinegar has to be the richest and most flavorful of all vinegars yet it contains no fat but significant calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, sodium and potassium.  Balsamico’s carbohydrates are mainly derived from the natural sugar of the balsam plant.

Rice vinegar

Rice vinegar is low in sodium and a great source of iron, potassium, carbohydrates as well as calcium and amino acids.

Distilled white vinegar

Distilled vinegar is also known as white vinegar as it is so clear in color and not surprisingly, it is also the least beneficial and nutritious.  Nevertheless, it offers a few minerals including calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and potassium.
