Eat in for a better school lunch

San Francisco Slow Food will host a lunch time Labor Day Eat In at the San Francisco Civic Center plaza. One of hundreds across the country that will take place Monday September 7th, Eat Ins are pot luck protests that are part of Slow Food USA's Time For Lunch campaign for  'real food' in schools.

The National School lunch program serves 35 million highly processed daily meals in school cafeterias in the United States. Food for the school lunch program is sourced from industrialized farms and little or no attention is paid to procuring organic, sustainable, or locally grown food.  The Childhood Nutrition Act  establishes the rules and funding for school lunches and it is up for reauthorization in September by Congress.

Slow Food Eat Ins call attention to a growing movement for fresher, more vital, less processed meals for our nations children. Slow Food hopes the Labor Day Eat Ins will send a message to Congress that Americans want better quaility lunches in school cafeterias. In 2008, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi targeted the congressional dining hall as a part of her 'Green the Capital' program. The end of 1950's cafeteria food came quickly for congress, elected officials now choose from a selection organic, locally grown food on compostable plates. Participants of Labor Day Eat Ins hope to send Congress a message that America's children deserve the same makeover in their school cafeterias.
