You Say Tomato, located unexpectedly just south of downtown Kansas City, is the type of restaurant where you can easily become a regular. This quaint restaurant quietly beckons locals back to yesteryear, leaving the hustle bustle of the 21st century behind. Hidden away from highway billboards, You Say Tomato displays few signs. One of them, from the original Weneck Brothers Grocery which occupied the spot in the 1930s, hangs over the counter. Eclectic tables and chairs, old-fashioned light fixtures, and local artwork decorate the dining area.
The food, just like the store, is the creation of local owners. A handwritten menu consists of a variety of made-from-scratch breakfast options such as French toast with real maple syrup, cinnamon rolls, biscuits and gravy, and assorted coffee drinks. Non-hurried workers prepare the food in an open kitchen, and then deliver it in a friendly, personal manner.
Besides appetizing, affordable food and amiable service, You Say Tomato offers wireless internet access and the convenience of grocery shopping right inside the restaurant. The grocery store is located off to the side of the dining area where you can buy butter, flour, sugar, coffee, and produce.
If you are ready to escape the mass-produced, consumeristic norm, try the charming You Say Tomato at 2801 Holmes. It is open Monday through Saturday 7 am to 3 pm, and Sunday brunch is served 8 am to 2 pm.
