Social Networking. It's huge amongst the young today. People use it to communicate quick and simple messages between each other. Going to the bar tonight? Tell your friends with a Facebook update. See something interesting on the Internet? Tweet it. Social technology sites such as Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter keep people connected in this way.

People are also using these websites for online dating.  For people too busy to actually go out and spend at least an hour someone early on, this can be a godsend.  The first key step is to get that person attracted, and there are three key steps to that:

  • Intrigue - What can you do to make that person curious about you?
  • Innuendo - What can you do to suggest that you two should progress together?
  • Logistics - When/Where/How can you two meet up?

These three points are important to attracting someone through electronic communication.  They are taken from the works of Vin DiCarlo.  When first using an update, first go for intrigue--state something that would interest another person.  Then, when they reply, insert some innuendos--get their mind jogging about future adventures.  Finally, if all goes well, go for the meetup.

The whole process is writing a copy.  Going back to Vin DiCarlo's advertisement, he uses many techniques to sell his product.  You are doing the same thing, except your product is yourself.  Check out these techniques he uses in his copy and work them into your game:

  • Assume rapport - As seen when he opens up with "Dear Friend", the copy assumes that there is some sort of connection between the reader and the writer.  Whenever a person responds to your status, you can assume that there is some interest between that person and you.
  • Provide testimonials - Testimonials in ad copies are like social proof.  By having people comment on your statuses, you show that there's other people interested in what you have to say.
  • Emphasis - Copies utilize different fonts and colors to make text stand out.  While you can't do that with statuses, you can use words and phrases that will gather attention.  If you write "Who Dat!" as a Facebook status, you're guaranteed to have at least 3 people writing about it.  Find something that will garner the attention of other people.
  • Qualify and/or validate people - The copy here states that "this product is not for everyone" as well as states reasons as to why someone should not buy the product.  Make fun of other people or praise them in your status, but be sure to not go overboard.  If you do, it's easy to clean up--just put a smiley(=), :], etc.) or a j/k.
  • Create scenarios with the product - In this case, the product is you.  Create fun, imaginative scenarios and people will want to be in that reality.

Writing a good status update is like writing a good copy--start off slow and build up the reader, then go from there.  Another important technique any great writer should have is thievery; here are some status updates that you can steal and try out:

  • "___likes big butts and he cannot lie."
  • "___thinks brunettes do it better."
  • "___thinks women are like parking spots. All the good ones are taken, the others are too far, and the rest are all just handicapped. "
  • "___will marry the next girl who makes him baked lasagna--no prenup required."

One last interesting fact:  In a poll of over 890 women, Men's Health Magazine reports that the factor that impresses women most on a guys Facebook page is "clever status updates".  Are you ready to be in that percentile?
